Decorative Scissors

Wednesday, 22. October 2008 von Tammy

Gingher has just introduced “Roberta” – the latest in a series of scissors with a designer handle. “Roberta” is available in both a right and left handed 8” dressmaker shears, a 5” sewing scissor and a 4” embroidery scissor.

This made me think about all the ways that scissor manufacturers try to make “standard” scissors more unique. The function may not change, but the appeal sure does. Sewers are creative and unique, so it makes sense that their scissors should be too!

Many scissors come with handles in solid colors and silver or gold-tone finishes.

For example, Mundial has had solid-colored cushion-soft handles on their scissors and shears for years. From small 4 1/2″ scissors to 8 1/2″ shears and everything in between, Mundial gives you a variety of options.

I did a little searching for stylish-handled scissors from a variety of manufacturers and here is some of what I found:

In addition to Roberta, the Gingher designer series’ currently includes versions, such as Glory, Julia, and Bianca.

Others include the Amazing Notions “Mardi Gras” squeeze scissor (ANS5MG), Tool Tron Victorian embroidery scissor (#00301), and Nifty Notions Marbled Set (#7939A) and Victorian with colored handles (#7074).

Even rotary cutter manufacturers are joining the mix.

For instance, the Olfa 45mm cutter in Calantha florals – orange (#ORCCO) or plum (#ORCCP).

Whatever your style, there’s sure to be a scissor or cutter to suit you.

Pink October

Monday, 06. October 2008 von Tammy

Hopefully, you already know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And according to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 182,460 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women in 2008 alone.

Many companies have joining the fight against breast cancer by introducing products primarily in the color pink. The products increase awareness and in most cases, when one purchases these products, the company donates a percentage of the proceeds to support organizations such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

I thought I’d share a few of the sewing related items that I found from great companies like Amazing Designs, Better Home and Gardens, Clover, Olfa, Schmetz, and more who are supporting breast cancer awareness efforts.
